email from bashweb@klmbh.org::

Is your bike ready? Good... are your legs ready as well?
It's this Sunday and it's Kemensah so be prepared for a tough Bash! No newbie, no young kids, no kidding...

Orbea Concept Store in Sri Hartamas will support us again with providing free bananas, best leg fuel so far.

Bash #210 - Kemensah, Ulu Gombak
Ah, Kemensah. The dramatic Melawati ridge, her slopes draped in dense jungle, with the crags of the world's longest quartz ridge* soaring above. Tapir, python, monkey, hornbill, boar and even some larger cats call this area home, less than 10 km from the bright lights and Gucci stores of downtown KL. This is some of the last truly wild forest close to the city - but maybe not for much longer. The much-maligned KL Outer Ring Road is planned to come straight through this area, and will destroy all this heritage forever. Have you signed the petition yet?

KLMBH last bashed around this area in 2009 and your committee decided that we were well overdue for a return visit. So, they instructed a crack team of hares to get to work with GPS and parang, fighting thorns and donating blood to the mosquitoes and leeches for the sake of your enjoyment at Bash #210. (* At least, that's what the Malaysian Book of Records says, and who are we to argue with a publication which also includes such august feats as the world's largest mass circumcision?)

Date: 25th March, 2012
Time: 0920 for briefing, 0930 SHARP for ON ON!!
Hares: Phil Manfield, Leigh Foreman, Ronan Jezequel, Toby Stewart & Dangerous Mike Davies, with guest appearances on recces by Knut Bakke, Piet Moeleker and (we hope) one or two others

This will be a fairly tough bash. The Kemensah area is dominated by a steep ridge which means that there are not many options to set an "easy" ride. So, the long and short rides will both include several long, steep climbs. Please be honest with yourself when deciding whether to ride the long or the short - don't overestimate your fitness and if you have any doubt, choose the short. After a little bit of pusing-pusing through the streets of Taman Melawati, the ride will pass through steep terrain either side of the Melawati ridge. This area is true secondary jungle - this is not a fast-flowing ride in a palm plantation! The trails will not be technically difficult (no Kiara triple-terraces on this ride) but all riders (long and short) should be prepared for lots of climbing and some very steep trails (we figure around 800m of ascent for the long, and at least 400m of ascent for the short ride). On the recces we have done so far, every one of your hares has been off his bike on several of the big climbs, pushing, sweating and swearing at the mosquitoes... please keep this in mind and be ready for quite a lot of pushing, especially if it is wet. If you've not ridden a long ride before, this will not be a good choice for your first "long" experience. Parents please note: the "short" ride will be quite a lot tougher than on some recent bashes. If your kids aren't fond of pushing their bikes up steep hills, this might not be the best ride for them.

For the long ride, EYE PROTECTION should be considered MANDATORY. The hares will do their best to clear thorns and overhead bamboo hazards from the trail, but we can't guarantee we will get to it all - and we'd like everyone to go home from the bash with the same number of eyes they arrived with. Did we mention that this will be a tough bash with steep trails and long climbs, both on and off the bike? I'm sure we did.

Meeting point: GPS Coordinates N3.211089, E101.751895 / +3° 12' 40.04", +101° 45' 7.30"
Does anyone read these directions any more? It's 2012, people! Click the link and look at the map!
But just in case you can't:
1. Get on the MRR2 and make your way to the Taman Melawati exit.
2. If coming from Ampang, *do not* make the U-turn on the slip-road else you will end up going to the Zoo Negara.
3. From the MRR2 junction, drive North on Jalan Taman Melawati for about 400m. You will go through one set of traffic lights (go straight).
4. You will see a Caltex and a BHP petrol station on your left. Turn left and then immediately left (or right) to drive around the garage forecourts. The meeting point for the bash is in the parking area for the shoplots directly behind these two petrol stations - please park considerately. Do not drive through either petrol station to get to the parking area (unless you intend to stop and buy fuel!).
On On!
